Family caregivers provide 80 % of all home care services in the U.S. and have no formal training to communicate the medical needs of their loved ones to healthcare professionals. The value of family caregivers providing medical services is estimated at $257 billion a year. The National Family Caregivers Association’s mission is to support family caregivers through self-advocacy and self care education. NFCA goal is to protect the caregiver from stress and illness, while they are providing a medical and nurturing to loved ones and recognize this contribution to society that insures a higher quality of life, for both the caregiver and the care recipient. Guests: Connie Siskowski, is the Founder of Boca Raton Interfaith In Action, she serves on the Board of the State Of Florida Respite Coalition and is the Florida Representative of the National Family Caregivers Association. She helped produce the “What Works” project funded by the Quantum Foundation of the Palm Beaches. The study identified the affects of high school students who lived in homes that dealt with issues centered on caregiving of a family member. Dr. Juergen Bludau, is the Medical Director for the Joseph L. Morse Geriatric Center, in West Palm Beach. He believes caregivers are the primary part of a health management team. One of the issues caregivers face in the final stages is to adequately care for a loved one and the final issue of how to say goodbye to a loved one forever. One tool created to help doctors is the “Caregiver Self-Assessment Questionnaire” created by the American Medical Association to give doctors insight into a caregivers well being.
