During the 2005 Disability Mentoring Week in Palm Beach County the kick off celebration was hosted by the Jewish Community Center of the Greater Palm Beaches. The subject presented, FPL’s explanation of what happens when the lights go out. Guests: Rose Lee Archer was the Host speaker that presented to the guests in the audience why it is important to be pro-active in preparing for the aftermath of hurricanes based on the four hurricanes that hit the state of Florida in 2004. Little did anyone know that five days after the taping of this episode the entire state’s southeastern counties would be hit with a Category 3 Hurricane named Wilma. Tony Newbold, Florida Power & Light, Community Affairs Director was the featured speaker who offered Energy & Safety Tips for persons with disabilities during a power outage. Tony presented the facts on how FPL trains their teams to be specifically responsible for the safety and medical needs of the county’s special needs population. Tony made it perfectly clear that everyone is responsible for their own personal preparedness plan and for those who have special needs they must rely on their caregivers and facility administrators to implement the plan. The key is to have enough water and supplies for the first 5 days and to sit tight in their home or shelter for the first three days while government and first responders and FPL evaluates the damages from the storm.
