A systemic labor shortage occurs when the overall number of new job openings exceeds the number of qualified new entrants in a national economy for a sustained period of years. Labor shortages spread across a wide range of occupations and skill groups. From wartime economies to peacetime economies, the gap between baby boomers and entrants of college-educated workers widens due to the boomers’ mass retirements. US Business Leaders have begun to tap into America’s most underutilized labor pool, persons with disabilities. The Able Trust has awarded over $14 million to individuals with disabilities and nonprofit agencies throughout Florida for employment-related purposes. Its programs have enabled approximately 2,000 Florida citizens with disabilities to enter the workforce each year. The Florida Business Leadership Network (BLN) seeks to promote two primary personnel policies: diversity policies that include people with disabilities and hiring practices that target candidates with disabilities. The BLN is an employer-led venture of the US Department of Labor, Office of Disability Employment Policy that is sponsored in Florida by The Able Trust.
