History of Disability Mentoring began in 1999; AAPD in Washington DC received a grant from U.S. Department of Labor. 1998, Disability Mentoring Month was introduced to City of Boca Raton, inform & advocate to employ talents of people with disabilities. 2003, AAPD strengthened partnership to expand career exploration through national corporate advocacy.
Corporations benefit through DM as a cost effective recruiting tool, offering screened selected candidates. HR fulfills EEO requirements & identifies a valuable labor pool to reduce future job turnover.

Facts:
Only 10% of Florida students with disabilities graduate from high school with some form of employment.
According to the Council of State Administrators of Vocational Rehabilitation‚ more than 70% of youth with disabilities are still unemployed two years after graduation.

Bureau of Labor Statistics, reports 22.8% of people with disabilities employed in the labor force compared with 70.9 % for persons with no disability.
